Can someone recommend some good websites for checking out the iceberg yours in Chile and Argentina? Is a tour package best? Or can we just arrive and start finding good stuff to do?
What is the best time of year to check out the glaciers?

HiWinter (their winter) is not a great time to go as it is very cold in those areas. Any other time is fine. Tours might help you with planning and save you some time. Are you only interested in seeing glaciers (they are in the southern, Patagonian part) or also interested in other parts of Chile or even Argentina? How long are you going for? I would be better able to help with itinerary if I knew this.
Visit Chile at visit-chile.org lists many operators some of whom specialize in going to the glaciers and similar terrain. Chalten Travel at Chaltentravel.com has a variety of glacier and trekking tours in Patagonia. Also take a look at gapadventures.com.
If you are interested in a wider and more upscale tour take a look at Latour at Latour.com. They have a variety of Argentina and Chile tours including a tour that visits the Perito Moreno glacier.
Hope this helps

Hello!, I'm organizing an expedition to the South of Chile, starting from Valdivia, visiting Puerto Montt, the famous National Park Pumalín ( where we still have alerces that are 60 meters high), Chaitén, the glacier "el amarillo" and coming trough Chiloé back to Valdivia. If you want more information please write me estebanpatroni@gmail.com The best time to do this is in January and February, prices depend on the route and duration of the expedition

All of this talk about icebergs has me thinking about the melting ice caps that there are to the North. The very same caps that are known to be the ones that can potentially cause some most disastrous and indeed very devastating effects in this lovely planet which we all inhabit.
