Video: Life In The Sun - Chile July 2001 Above this "last stop before Antarctica" a huge hole has opened up in the ozone layer - exposing its inhabitants to the full effects of unfiltered sunlight. Here fishing is the life-line of the economy. But there is evidence that the changes in climate are spoiling the normally fertile waters of the Beagle Canal. Juan's nets used to be heaving with King Crabs, but now he and his colleague have to fish deeper and deeper for them. Meanwhile, residents are warned to stay in doors as much as possible and children must wear protective clothing and sunglasses. The midday sun can burn skin in only 5 minutes. Despite the obvious risks, sunscreen is not available. Governor Eduardo Barros urges world leaders to unite: "this is not only a Chilean problem... all countries near the South Pole will need to make the legal rights of their people a top priority".
I agree with you. This terrible issue about ozone layer is not only happening in Chile but all over the world. If it's totally destroyed, it won't solely damage human skin, but, also devastate the community. I think even natural resources will greatly be affected if nobody can find solutions for this alarming issue about ozone layer. So I think peple in Chile are protective enough most especially for the kids.
This is one of the reason why lots of people would love to move in Chile. The seemingly easy life in the country really attracts a lot of people. I myself would love to move in the country as well. I am sure that I will enjoy living in there. The fact that people can go out in and walk under the sun without worries is something. Good day to all.
I am a little perplexed as to why such a huge hole in the ozone layer would open up above this little fishing village, so far from the main culprits of air pollution. Could it be that ozone holes are not caused by air pollution and are simply a natural result of the sun's rays? I know that thinking about ozone holes is a good reason to cut down on our pollution, but will it really help?
